About Us

Criterion’s success is based on a design philosophy that adapts the latest trends in furniture style and functionality to specific customer needs. Criterion specialises in creating environments in the home and office, which work for their customers. Among its best selling ranges is office furniture, computer workstations and home entertainment centres.

With over 35 years experience in the furniture industry, Criterion has earned a reputation for delivering innovative quality products at affordable prices.

It all started in 1964 when Walter Smaill, a young university student with a passion for electronics, was asked by his mother to make a cabinet to house his home made stereo system that had taken over the family living room!

Walter obliged and did such a great job that soon he had a regular stream of customers wanting similar units. In 1966 Walter’s brother, Brian, joined the business and Criterion continued to develop to become a substantial supplier of cabinets to major electronic companies in USA, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. Their customers included Technics, Panasonic, Phillips, Marantz, Akai, Toshiba, Sanyo and JVC.

In the late 80’s Criterion switched emphasis to attractive, functional furniture, for the home and office, marketed under the "Criterion" brand name. Major markets now include New Zealand, Australia, USA and Singapore.

The plant in New Zealand has the capacity to manufacture over 500,000 pieces of furniture per annum. Criterion furniture is made from reconstituted radiata pine sourced from man-made forests, "where the trees grow faster than they are being milled". Cabinets are laminated with durable wood grain, patterned or finishes.
